Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Oscar Piastri of McLaren endured another difficult chapter in the 2026 Formula 1 season after failing to start the Chinese Grand Prix due to a critical technical issue.
The incident was compounded by the fact that teammate Lando Norris also did not take the start, with both MCL40 cars affected by problems linked to the power unit supplied by Mercedes-Benz. The issue was understood to be related to the electrical system, a vital component in modern hybrid-era Formula 1 machinery. This development reinforced earlier concerns raised by McLaren regarding limited data transparency from Mercedes HPP during the Melbourne round.
From a competitive standpoint, this double DNS represents a significant setback for McLaren, particularly after demonstrating strong upward momentum over the past two seasons. The failure to start not only results in zero points but also disrupts the team’s technical development trajectory as it attempts to close the gap to front-runners such as Red Bull Racing and Scuderia Ferrari.

Former Formula 1 driver David Coulthard offered a critical assessment of the situation, highlighting the scale of the team’s current difficulties.
“This is my old team, and from the highs of the past couple of years to where they are now, it has been quite dismal. To have both cars unable to start the Grand Prix points to serious reliability concerns,” Coulthard said on the Up To Speed podcast.
Prior to the failure, Piastri had made a light-hearted remark while on the grid, noting that at least he had managed to reach the grid this time. The comment quickly turned ironic when his car developed issues shortly after he stepped away briefly.
“He said to me, ‘At least I’ve made it to the grid this time.’ But by the time he returned, the car was no longer able to run. It shows how quickly things can change,” Coulthard added.
Piastri also commented in the media pen that he had, for the first time in a while, the opportunity to watch consecutive races from the sidelines—an indication of the frustration surrounding his early 2026 campaign.
Coulthard further suggested that such ongoing struggles could prompt both Piastri and Norris to reassess their long-term futures with McLaren. Using a “light bulb” analogy, he described the dynamic nature of driver-team relationships in Formula 1.
“Drivers are like light bulbs. They are put in when they shine brightly and taken out when they do not. That relationship works both ways between driver and team,” he explained.
Despite the external scrutiny, McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has publicly backed both drivers, emphasizing the team’s commitment to resolving the underlying technical issues in collaboration with its engine supplier.
In terms of championship implications, the Shanghai setback risks widening the gap between McLaren and its key rivals in the constructors’ standings. With a long season ahead, the pressure is now firmly on the team to address its reliability concerns ahead of the upcoming rounds, where consistency will be critical.
McLaren now enters a decisive phase of the 2026 season, with its ability to respond technically and operationally likely to define its competitiveness as the championship battle intensifies heading into the next race weekend.
