Oscar Piastri Admits McLaren Anger Boiled Over

Oscar Piastri has admitted his sarcastic radio messages to McLaren were driven by anger after contact with Carlos Sainz cost him crucial time during the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix.

Piastri had completed his second pit stop when he encountered Sainz, who was battling Fernando Alonso despite blue flags being shown. Contact between the pair delayed Piastri at a decisive stage of his attempt to retain track position over Lando Norris.

Piastri had stopped first from the lead to exploit the powerful undercut at the Hungaroring. However, the time lost behind Sainz allowed Norris to gain the strategic advantage and emerge ahead after making his own pit stop several laps later.

Piastri’s frustration was immediately evident over team radio. He vented his anger at Sainz before replying sarcastically when race engineer Tom Stallard explained that the incident had caused the decisive time loss.

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella said Piastri clarified his remarks immediately after leaving the car. Stella considered the reaction understandable because Piastri had led almost half the race before losing the advantage through an incident with a backmarker.

Piastri later explained that McLaren’s initial decision to pit him was designed to cover Lewis Hamilton and was not the main cause of his anger. He briefly felt the team could have delayed Norris’s stop, but accepted McLaren could not compromise his team-mate’s race because of an incident outside either driver’s control.

“I was just very, very pissed off in the moment,” Piastri said. He stressed there was no lasting tension with the pit wall once he had reconsidered the strategic circumstances.

Sainz received a five-second penalty for the incident, while Piastri later retired with a gearbox failure. McLaren left the Hungaroring with Norris’s victory but will also need to review communication and strategy management when its drivers next compete directly for the lead.
