Kimi Antonelli Sets Major Mission After F1 Surprise

Kimi Antonelli has underlined his determination to keep learning and improving after ending the first half of the 2026 Formula 1 season at the top of the drivers’ standings.

The Mercedes driver has exceeded expectations in his second F1 campaign, claiming six victories and nine podiums across the opening 11 rounds. That record leaves him two grand prix wins clear of his nearest rival.

Antonelli enters the summer break with a 50-point advantage over Lewis Hamilton. The Ferrari driver sits nine points ahead of George Russell in third after a sequence of problems and declining performance in the sister Mercedes.

His championship position has surprised Antonelli, who admitted he did not expect to lead the title fight at this stage. However, he believes the strength of the car and the team’s work have allowed him to maximise the opportunities available.

“For sure, I did not expect to find myself in this position,” Antonelli said. “The car has been extremely good, the team has done an incredible job and, on my side, I try to maximise every opportunity I have.”

Despite holding a significant points advantage, the 19-year-old believes further progress remains necessary. Antonelli stressed that learning will remain a priority as he looks to maintain consistency and withstand pressure from his rivals during the second half of the campaign.

“There’s still lots of work to do and lots to learn, but it was a good first half of the season,” he added. “Now I’m looking forward to the second half, and we’re just going to keep pushing.”

Antonelli will carry his championship lead into Zandvoort in late August, where Mercedes begins the next phase of its attempt to maintain control of the drivers’ title fight.
