Oscar Piastri Retires From 2026 Hungarian F1 GP After Gearbox Failure

Oscar Piastri retired from the 2026 Hungarian Formula 1 Grand Prix after a gearbox failure forced him out on lap 56, shortly after he had lost the race lead to his team-mate.

Piastri made a strong start and capitalised when Lando Norris ran wide at Turn 3. The Australian moved into first place and controlled the opening half of the race.

McLaren then called Piastri in first during the pit-stop sequence. The strategy returned him to the circuit in traffic and required him to pass several cars that had not yet stopped.

The decisive complication arrived when Piastri attempted to lap Carlos Sainz. Contact between the two cars cost Piastri several important seconds, while Sainz was later handed a five-second penalty for causing the collision.

The lost time allowed Lando Norris to extend his stint, stop on the following lap and rejoin ahead of Piastri. The sequence shifted the strategic advantage towards Norris after Piastri had previously controlled the race.

Piastri’s difficulties became terminal on lap 56 when his gearbox failed. He was forced to stop the car and could not continue, ending his opportunity to secure a podium or victory at the Hungaroring.

The stranded McLaren triggered a virtual safety car. That neutralisation allowed Norris and Lewis Hamilton to make pit stops while losing less time than they would have under normal racing conditions.

The retirement represented a painful conclusion for Piastri after he had placed himself in a strong position to win the 2026 Hungarian Formula 1 Grand Prix. McLaren must now identify the cause of the gearbox failure before the championship resumes after the summer break.
