The motorsport world is mourning the passing of Alex Zanardi, the former Formula 1 driver and Paralympic gold medallist, who has died at the age of 59. The news was confirmed by his family in an official statement.
Zanardi had not been seen in public since a severe road accident in June 2020 in Italy while training on a handcycle. The incident resulted in significant facial injuries and required multiple surgeries, followed by a prolonged rehabilitation period after he returned home in late 2021.
During his Formula 1 career, Zanardi competed in 41 grands prix with teams including Jordan, Minardi, Lotus, and Williams between 1991 and 1999. Although he did not score points, he was recognised for his determination and resilience within the paddock.

His greatest racing success came in the CART series with Chip Ganassi Racing, where he secured two championships, including a dominant 1998 season featuring seven victories. This performance earned him a return to Formula 1 with Williams in 1999.
A major turning point came with his life-changing accident at Lausitzring in 2001, which resulted in the amputation of both legs. Despite this, Zanardi returned to competitive motorsport, including touring cars and endurance racing, notably competing in the Daytona 24 Hours with BMW.
Beyond motorsport, Zanardi achieved remarkable success as a Paralympic athlete. He won four gold medals across the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Games, alongside multiple world championship titles in handcycling, establishing himself as a global sporting icon.
In its statement, the family confirmed that Zanardi passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones and requested privacy during this period of mourning, while expressing gratitude for the widespread support received.
Zanardi’s legacy extends far beyond results, defined by resilience, adaptability, and achievement across multiple disciplines, leaving a lasting impact on both motorsport and international sport.
