Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Oscar Piastri and McLaren maintained internal stability throughout last season’s title fight, with the Australian highlighting the importance of his working relationship with team-mate Lando Norris under intense competitive pressure.

Piastri stated that the dynamic between himself and Norris did not significantly change despite both drivers competing directly for the world championship. The ability to separate on-track rivalry from off-track interaction proved critical in preserving team cohesion within the Woking-based outfit.

“In all honesty, I don’t think it really changed. We’re both quite good at separating what happens on track from what happens off track. Even our marketing commitments together stayed exactly the same,” Piastri explained in an official interview.

The Australian also noted that their relationship improved over time, particularly after their initial phase as team-mates. Increased familiarity and constant interaction throughout the Formula 1 calendar contributed to a more stable and productive partnership.

In a championship battle that also involved Max Verstappen, Piastri ultimately finished 13 points behind Norris. Despite the competitive intensity, he emphasised that the rivalry never escalated into a damaging internal conflict.

“We both understood the situation—we were trying to beat each other, and only one of us could win. But it never got nasty, and that was really important,” he added.

Piastri acknowledged that in more extreme circumstances, such a rivalry could have led to serious internal consequences, including potential changes in driver line-up. This underlined the importance of maintaining constructive team dynamics during high-pressure situations.

There were still on-track flashpoints during the season, notably in Canada, Singapore, and Austin, along with several near-misses. However, these incidents were managed quickly within the team and never allowed to escalate into larger issues.

“In title battles between team-mates, you often see games or hidden tactics develop. That’s not how we operate. It doesn’t take much for situations to escalate, and we were aware of that,” Piastri explained.

He also highlighted the role of the team in enforcing accountability and maintaining discipline, ensuring that any incidents were addressed constructively. This structured approach allowed McLaren to preserve a positive working environment, which remains a key factor as the team looks to respond to a challenging start to the 2026 season.
