Hertrech 'Hert' Eugene Jr., the Hoonigan personality, suffered a major crash during a demonstration session at the Yokohama World Time Attack Challenge (WTAC) at Sydney Motorsport Park on Friday night. His Mazda RX-7, nicknamed 'Twerkstallion', was destroyed after hitting a concrete wall.
The crash occurred while Hert was drifting in the opposite direction, a maneuver typically only allowed for exhibitions, not during competition. Broadcast footage showed his car sliding across the grass before the front end struck the leading edge of a concrete wall.
Hert described it as the "worst crash of my life" and later explained that he had been given special permission to drive in the opposite direction for the demo session. "Everyone say goodbye to The Twerkstallion," he wrote on social media. "It's been a good run. I was smoked out inside and couldn't see and reinitiated in a bad spot and the car just got away from me. I'm absolutely gutted. I've had this car for 15 years and owe it so much of my life and now it's gone."
The Mazda RX-7 had just been fitted with a new engine a day before it was shipped to Australia, after the previous engine blew during testing. Hert had owned the car for 15 years, making the loss particularly emotional.
The incident became a major talking point at WTAC 2021, which continues until September 5. Despite the crash, the event proceeded as scheduled. Fans and fellow competitors alike offered support to Hert, who is well-known in the American automotive community.
