"I do have an answer and I'm working on it," Russell said ahead of this weekend's Madrid race. "I think it's been much improved. So I'm very pleased with that sort of step I've taken."
The progress started to show after the summer break. Russell outqualified Antonelli in the last three sessions. However, his qualifying edge hasn't translated into consistent race pace. The latest evidence came at Monza last weekend, where Antonelli started 19th, overtook Russell, and claimed a sensational victory. That win not only extended the points gap but also put one hand on his maiden world title.
Russell realises his title chances are fading. "I definitely need some luck and I need some good performances," he added. "It's not really something I'm thinking about because, as I said, right now he's performing better than me. So he deserves to be leading the championship." This statement shows Russell's maturity under pressure, though he remains determined to keep improving.
For Mercedes, this situation presents a fascinating dynamic. On one hand, they have a young driver at the peak of his confidence, potentially sealing a championship. On the other, the more senior Russell is still searching for consistency. With ten races left, including Madrid and a series of tracks demanding quick adaptation, this internal battle will be one of the most compelling storylines. One thing is clear: Russell is not giving up. He focuses on self-improvement, not the points deficit. "I'm focused on driving faster and just finding more performance," he asserted.
