A driver involved in a horrific crash at the World Time Attack Challenge (WTAC) has finally spoken from hospital, confirming he is safe and thanking everyone who assisted him.
The incident began when the Nissan Silvia S13 he was driving went off track at Sydney Motorsport Park without being able to control it. The car failed to stop and hit the Turn 2 tyre barrier at high speed, launching into the air before landing on top of a grass embankment.
The driver, known as Price, was able to walk away from the car before being taken to Westmead Hospital for precautionary checks. He was doing double duty at WTAC, having been offered the chance to drive the Shockworks entry alongside his own Semi-Prom Motorsport Hyundai i30 N sedan.
"Just want to let everyone know I'm okay," Price said in a video. "A little bit of soreness and stiffness, but other than that, I don't know how, but I've walked away from it."
"First of all, a massive thank you to the Shockworks crew. Chris (O'Brien), everyone else involved as well. They built a safe car. It was a bloody fast car as well, so I'm just sad that we couldn't get a result out of it, and I feel bad for them. They're a family team," he added.
Price, who is in his 10th year of competing at WTAC, praised the trackside medical staff and fellow competitors who stopped to help, including rally driver Brendan Reeves. He also thanked the medical team and recovery crew from Sydney Motorsport Park, as well as the ambos and people at Westmead.
Price's best time of the day was a 1:34.0490s, which put him sixth overall in the Haltech Clubsprint Class. Alex Michalsky was the fastest in that class with a 1:29.9280s in his Plazmaman Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 6.
World Time Attack Challenge continues at Sydney Motorsport Park on September 5.
