Andrea Kimi Antonelli extended his lead at the top of the 2026 Formula 1 drivers' championship with a stunning victory at the Italian Grand Prix. Starting from 19th on the grid, the Mercedes driver pulled off a remarkable recovery drive, overtaking teammate George Russell late in the race to take the chequered flag at Monza.
It was a perfect day for Mercedes as Russell finished second, securing a 1-2 finish that further strengthened their position in the constructors' standings. For Ferrari, however, it was a day to forget: Lewis Hamilton could only manage sixth, while Charles Leclerc crashed out early in the race.
Title Battle Heats Up
With 26 points added from this win, Antonelli now has 267 points, 66 clear of Russell in second. Hamilton remains third with 191 points, but Lando Norris is closing in, just eight points behind in fourth. The battle for second place is intensifying as McLaren continues to show strong form.
Max Verstappen, meanwhile, is stuck in sixth with 142 points, a long way off the leader. Red Bull are also struggling, with Isack Hadjar and Liam Lawson in eighth and ninth respectively. Mercedes' dominance this season is becoming increasingly difficult to challenge.
In the constructors' championship, Mercedes lead with 468 points, 122 ahead of Ferrari. McLaren are third with 309, followed by Red Bull with 219. With several races remaining, Antonelli's ability to perform under pressure, as shown by this comeback, is a clear sign that he is a strong title contender this season.
