Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Franco Colapinto of Alpine has revealed the extent of the damage sustained to his car following a collision with team-mate Esteban Ocon during the 2026 Chinese Grand Prix.
The incident occurred shortly after Colapinto exited the pits on hard tyres that were still below optimal operating temperature. With limited grip available, Ocon attempted an aggressive move to the inside at Turn 2. The manoeuvre resulted in contact between the two cars, spinning Colapinto and costing him track position during a critical phase of the race.
The FIA stewards deemed Ocon responsible for the collision and issued a 10-second time penalty, citing insufficient room during the overtaking attempt against a driver on cold tyres. Ocon ultimately finished outside the points.

Despite the setback, Colapinto recovered to finish in 10th place, securing his first point of the 2026 season. The result also contributed to a double-points finish for Alpine, with Pierre Gasly delivering a strong sixth-place result, marking the team’s most productive race outcome since 2024.
From a technical perspective, Colapinto confirmed that the damage extended beyond superficial contact. The impact compromised the car’s floor, significantly affecting aerodynamic efficiency and overall performance for the remainder of the race.
“It is frustrating. I had a very good start on the hard tyres and was in a strong position while extending the stint,” said Franco Colapinto.
“We stopped three laps after Esteban. I came out ahead, and he hit me on the right rear.”
“I had a big hole in the floor, which was not great for performance, but he came and said sorry, so it is all good.”
Colapinto also highlighted that the battle between the two Alpine drivers had been closely contested prior to the incident, reflecting the intensity of midfield competition.
“We had a good fight during the race, it was really close, but in the end it didn’t finish well. He apologised, and everything is fine,” he added.
In terms of team performance, the result offers a positive indicator for Alpine despite the incident. Colapinto’s ability to retain a points finish despite significant aerodynamic damage suggests a degree of underlying competitiveness within the package, even under compromised conditions.
Looking ahead, Alpine’s focus will shift toward improving consistency and reducing operational risks during close on-track battles. The Shanghai incident underlines the narrow margins in Formula 1, where even minor contact can carry substantial performance consequences over a race distance.
