Carlos Sainz has reiterated that discussions over his future with Williams will begin during Formula 1's 2026 summer break after the team endured a more difficult season than it experienced last year.
Sainz joined Williams in 2025 following his departure from Ferrari with the intention of becoming part of the Grove squad's resurgence project. However, the 2026 technical regulation reset has not delivered the expected step forward, with Williams instead slipping further away from the front-running teams.
That situation has raised questions over Sainz's longer-term position with the team. Asked when he expects to make a decision on his future, the Spaniard reiterated that his plan had always been to use the summer break to assess the situation.
“I honestly don’t know. I cannot give you a date, but I imagine, as I always said, that I was going to wait until the summer to sit down with my team and think about this,” Sainz said.
Sainz also intends to hold discussions with Team Principal James Vowles regarding both the direction of the Williams project and his place within it. “Discuss with them, with James and everyone, the future of the team and my future in it,” he added.
Williams had previously identified the 2026 regulation change as an opportunity to move closer to the leading group, but the season so far has not produced that progress. That makes the summer discussions particularly important as Sainz evaluates the medium-term prospects of the project.
Sainz has not set a firm deadline for a final decision. He expects the picture to become clearer during the summer break before Formula 1 resumes for the second half of the 2026 season.
