Formula 1 has entered its mandatory summer shutdown following the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix, requiring teams to halt most performance and car development work for 14 consecutive calendar days.
The shutdown is more than simply a period without racing. It forms part of the regulations designed to prevent teams from continuing performance work while the championship is paused, while also controlling costs and giving engineers, mechanics, production staff and other personnel genuine time away after a schedule that stretches back into pre-season.
During the shutdown, teams are prohibited from running their wind tunnels for Formula 1 purposes, carrying out CFD or other aerodynamic simulation work linked to performance, or developing concepts, components, systems and upgrades for current or future cars. Manufacturing components, wind tunnel models, tooling and prototypes, as well as assembling or preparing F1 car parts, must also stop.
The restrictions extend to F1-specific design, development and production work carried out by employees, consultants or subcontractors. Teams therefore cannot use technical communications, including emails and discussions, as a route to continue formal development activity during the closure.
The principle of the rule is to stop structured development rather than police every private thought. A designer could return from holiday with an idea, but the team cannot use the shutdown to model, test, manufacture or process that concept through its normal factory systems.
Not every business function is required to stop. Repairs to a car damaged before the shutdown can continue with approval from the FIA. Work on static or demonstration cars is also permitted provided current Formula 1 components are not used, while wind tunnel and CFD activity for projects unrelated to the team's F1 programme can continue.
Maintenance of buildings, IT systems, equipment and factory infrastructure is permitted, as is preparation of sea freight provided it excludes current F1 car components. Financial stocktaking, routine non-performance-related administration, team-building, staff welfare and entertainment activities can also continue.
Each team nominates its own shutdown window to the FIA before the season begins, with the period required to fall within July and/or August. In 2026, the calendar provides a long gap between the Hungarian Grand Prix on 24-26 July and the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort on 21-23 August. Most teams are expected to observe their 14-day closure from Monday, 3 August until Monday, 17 August before normal Formula 1 operations resume.
