Mercedes 'Closely Monitoring' F1 2026 Upgrades Amid Engine Penalty Threat

Mercedes has confirmed that it still has further upgrades planned for the second half of the 2026 Formula 1 season, but team principal Toto Wolff has stressed that the team is closely monitoring when to introduce them. This decision comes amid intense competition from Ferrari and McLaren, who have been more aggressive with their development.

After winning the first six grands prix from pole, Mercedes has only managed two more victories in the next five races. Ferrari and McLaren have proven more aggressive by bringing substantial upgrade packages in Miami and Barcelona, which prompted Wolff to question how they could do so under the $215 million cost cap.

In contrast, Mercedes has only brought its major upgrade in Canada, and since then has focused on gradual but smaller updates. Wolff explained that this strategy is deliberate: "We need to be really just strategic about when to bring the upgrades. When do we think they will have the biggest impact on performance, rather than just throwing it in at every grand prix like in the past."

Wolff also acknowledged that the team can no longer bring upgrades at every race due to financial constraints. "We cannot do this, so you will have to eventually put an upgrade in and probably you leapfrog a little bit the others and then it kind of flattens out and the other ones coming stronger," he added. Mercedes is currently in a good spot budget-wise, with plans for more upgrades in the second half of the season.

However, there is one major caveat: the looming threat of grid penalties due to engine usage. Kimi Antonelli and George Russell are on their fourth and third new engines respectively for 2026. If they use a fifth, they will incur a 10-place grid drop. This is a consequence of Mercedes' reliability woes.

Deputy team principal Bradley Lord admitted that penalties are almost inevitable. "Looking at how many we've used in the first half of the season, it's almost inevitable that at some point there will be penalties to take," he said. The strategy team and engineers at Brixworth will work to determine the optimal route through the rest of the season, though Lord added that it will be hard to reach the end of the season with the existing power units.

With 12 rounds remaining, Mercedes must balance the need for performance with the risk of penalties. The decision on when to bring upgrades will be key in maintaining their championship lead.
