MotoGP Extends Silverstone Contract Until 2028, Securing British GP Future

MotoGP has officially announced a two-year contract extension with Silverstone, ensuring the British Grand Prix remains on the calendar until at least the 2028 season. The announcement was made on the eve of the 2026 UK round, marking the start of the second half of the season.

The new deal provides short-to-mid-term certainty for the future of the British GP, which has often been questioned. Although MotoGP has not been able to replicate Formula 1's recent success at Silverstone, the UK remains a crucial market for the championship. The series stated the agreement “provides a strong platform to continue investing in long-term success” of the event, which attracted nearly 100,000 fans last year.

To boost the event's popularity this year, MotoGP held a watch party in London during the Dutch GP, while the official pre-event press conference for the British GP was also moved to the capital. These steps highlight the commitment to strengthening ties with British fans.

“This extension underscores our commitment to two-wheel racing,” said Silverstone CEO Stuart Pringle. “It's not just about signing a contract; it's about reaffirming our vision. This renewed partnership secures our place as the UK's undisputed home of elite international racing. Extending our relationship is confirmation of our shared commitment to delivering the ultimate high-speed experience for fans here in Britain.”

MotoGP returned to Silverstone in 2010 when the circuit was investing heavily in infrastructure, including the new ‘Silverstone Wing’ complex. Since then, it has been an annual fixture on the calendar, despite recurring questions about the event's future, with only the 2018 and 2020 races cancelled due to external factors.

World championship motorcycle racing first visited Silverstone in 1977, marking the championship's debut on the British mainland after the Isle of Man TT served as the de facto UK round. Donington Park took over as the British GP venue in 1987, before Silverstone made a comeback at the start of the last decade.

Although the 2027 calendar is yet to be released, MotoGP confirmed that next year's British GP will again take place in August. With this extension, fans can look forward to world-class racing at Silverstone for years to come.
