Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Max Verstappen suffered a shock crash during qualifying for the 2026 Australian Grand Prix at the Albert Park Circuit, with former Formula 1 driver Jolyon Palmer questioning whether a possible driver error contributed to the incident.

The four-time world champion was forced to start the season opener from 20th on the grid after crashing during the opening phase of qualifying. As Verstappen began a flying lap, the rear axle of his car suddenly locked under braking into Turn 1, sending the Red Bull Racing driver into the gravel before making contact with the barrier.

The incident came as a surprise even to Verstappen, who admitted afterward that he had never experienced such a sudden loss of control under braking during his Formula 1 career.

Ahead of the race, the Milton Keynes-based team remained uncertain about the exact cause of the crash. However, Palmer revealed that team principal Laurent Mekies confirmed Verstappen had braked extremely hard when approaching the first corner.

According to Palmer, the aggressive braking characteristics of the RB22 could have played a role in the rear locking, raising the possibility that the Dutch driver’s braking input may have contributed to the accident.

“My hunch is that it's obviously small details that made the difference. They've got a car that's massively aggressive on the rear braking and on the MGU-K harvesting,” Palmer said on the F1 Nation podcast.

“That’s something their rivals have all pointed out through testing — how aggressive they are, banging down the gears and getting good recharge.”

Palmer also suggested that the combination of Verstappen’s late qualifying run and heavy braking could have pushed the car beyond its operating window, particularly given the reduced downforce and grip characteristics of the new generation Formula 1 cars.

“My hunch is that they’ve got a car that’s prone to rear locking, and Max maybe just braked too hard and sent it over the edge with a little bit of mischief from the rear axle,” he explained.

The former Renault driver added that if the team cannot identify a clear technical fault, the uncertainty itself could become a concern for Red Bull moving forward in the championship.

“Because if the team can’t spot anything obvious, that’s a major concern that it could happen again, right? They don’t know what’s gone wrong.”

As the 2026 Formula 1 season continues beyond Melbourne, Red Bull faces the challenge of understanding the RB22’s braking behaviour and overall balance to avoid similar incidents in upcoming races.
