General Motors Australia and New Zealand (GM ANZ) has parted ways with Managing Director Jess Bala, a move that sends shockwaves through the local automotive industry. Bala, who took the helm in 2023, exits amid a turbulent period for the company as it struggles to find its footing following Holden's closure in 2020.
With nearly two decades in the GM system, Bala's tenure was marred by a problematic Cadillac launch and other product challenges, believed to have contributed to the decision. Despite this, the shake-up is not expected to affect the Camaro Supercars program, which is directly managed by US-based GM Motorsport.
The US-led appointments of Simon McNamara as program boss and Grant McPherson as technical lead came after Triple Eight defected to Ford, leaving Chevrolet as a minor player in this year's championship. Bala, a regular at Supercars events, including last weekend's Ipswich Super440, leaves with GM thanking her for her contributions.
Greg Rowe, currently Director of Sales and Operations, will serve as acting managing director. GM's statement praised Bala for driving growth in its portfolio, including Cadillac EVs, Corvette, and full-size trucks and SUVs. The question now is whether GM ANZ can recover its standing in the competitive Australian market.
