Marc Marquez Claims Sensational 2026 Australian GP Pole at Phillip Island

An astonishing display of resilience saw Marc Marquez secure pole position for the Australian Grand Prix at a damp Phillip Island circuit by an incredible 1.5-second margin, despite suffering an early crash during Q2.

As fresh rain began falling right at the start of the second qualifying session, a low-side spill into the Miller corner threatened to leave Marquez stranded down in a disastrous 12th place on the starting grid.

Refusing to let the setback derail his campaign, he swiftly managed to remount his Ducati machine. With the rainfall easing and the track temporarily clearing up for his subsequent run, the Spanish star immediately vaulted back to provisional pole.

Known wet-weather specialist Johann Zarco had initially set the pace and briefly reclaimed the top spot from Marquez during the frantic mid-session exchanges before the ultimate time attacks commenced.

Marquez then completely blew the competition away in the dying moments of the session, clocking a blistering 1m34.203s lap. This phenomenal effort left him an astonishing 1.494s clear of his younger brother and eventual second-place qualifier, Alex Marquez on the Gresini Ducati.

Zarco successfully defended a spot on the front row, steering his LCR Honda to third place, while championship rival Jorge Martin struggled to find true pole pace in the tricky damp conditions.

Martin still salvaged a very respectable fourth place on the grid with a crucial final effort, whereas his long-shot title-contending teammate Marco Bezzecchi faltered, managing only ninth position for the upcoming races.

Local favorite Jack Miller stole early headlines by topping Q1 and briefly holding a provisional front-row slot before ultimately converting it into a heartwarming fifth for Pramac Yamaha.

The contrasting fortunes of the grid were further highlighted at the rear, where Fabio Quartararo and Franco Morbidelli languished off the pace in 19th and 20th respectively, amidst a depleted grid missing any factory Hondas following Luca Marini's withdrawal due to illness.
