MotoGP, Sportrik Media - Johann Zarco has criticised the victory of Marc Marquez in the 2026 Jerez MotoGP Sprint, arguing that the Ducati rider should not have been allowed to win following a controversial pitlane entry.

The incident occurred when the Ducati Lenovo Team rider crashed at the final corner with five laps remaining in the flag-to-flag sprint. After remounting his damaged bike, Marquez crossed the run-off area at Turn 13 to enter the pitlane and switch to his wet machine, before rejoining and ultimately winning the race by over three seconds.

The move sparked widespread debate, although the FIM MotoGP Stewards investigated the incident and ruled that Marquez had not broken any regulations, taking no further action.

Zarco, however, disagreed with that conclusion, suggesting the manoeuvre went against the fundamental principles of racing.

“He shouldn’t win the race because when he crashes in the last corner, it already means he had decided not to pit. So if he comes back to the pits from there, it means he’s going backwards, and you don’t go backwards on the track,” Zarco said, as quoted by Crash.net.

The LCR Honda rider also questioned the lack of a penalty, despite acknowledging that interpretations of the rules may vary.

“If he doesn’t get a penalty, that’s frankly very strange. People might say he knows the rules better than anyone else, but I don’t think so — he was just incredibly lucky,” he added.

Zarco argued that the correct strategic decision would have been to pit one lap earlier as conditions deteriorated, suggesting that Marquez’s victory was influenced by timing rather than optimal execution.

“To win or even to be on the podium, you had to come in a lap earlier. He took a risk, and without that, maybe he would still have been fast, but not the winner,” Zarco explained.

Despite the criticism, Marquez’s actions were deemed legal under current regulations, as he did not rejoin against the flow of traffic and complied with pitlane entry rules.

Marquez himself later admitted that staying out on slick tyres for too long was a mistake, but emphasised that damage to his bike — particularly to the handlebars — meant he had no choice but to pit after the crash.

The controversy highlights the complexity of MotoGP’s flag-to-flag regulations, where split-second decisions and rule interpretations can significantly influence race outcomes.
