Formula 1 lands in Madrid this weekend as the brand-new Madring circuit hosts the Spanish Grand Prix for the first time. The 5.416km, 22-corner layout blends street sections with purpose-built track around the IFEMA exhibition centre, offering a fresh and demanding challenge for teams and drivers.
Madring becomes the 79th different circuit in F1 history and the first entirely new venue since Las Vegas in 2023. It also marks the sixth circuit to stage the Spanish GP, and Madrid welcomes F1 back after 45 years, having last hosted a race at Jarama in 1981.
One corner has already stolen the spotlight: La Monumental (Turn 12). Stretching roughly 550 metres with banking up to 24 percent, it is the longest banked corner on the F1 calendar. Drivers are expected to spend around six seconds sweeping through it, making it the spectacular centrepiece of Madring. Elsewhere, the track offers variety with straights reaching 340km/h, tight wall-lined sections, and notable elevation changes.
All eyes are on Kimi Antonelli, who arrives with momentum after a stunning victory at Monza. The Mercedes driver came from 19th on the grid to win and extend his championship lead over teammate George Russell to 66 points. Russell had a strong weekend in Italy but fell short of victory, while Mercedes heads to Madrid as the benchmark. Ferrari, meanwhile, desperately needs a response after a disappointing home race.
Charles Leclerc crashed out at Monza, while Lewis Hamilton could only manage sixth, failing to capitalise on the Tifosi's support. Hamilton, who won in Barcelona earlier this season, now has another chance to bolster his title hopes. He also shares the record for most Spanish GP wins (six) with Michael Schumacher, and this weekend offers the opportunity to become the outright record holder.
McLaren, for their part, hope the unpredictability of a new venue can spark a return to the top step. Oscar Piastri is the defending Spanish GP winner after his 2025 triumph in Barcelona, but he is still searching for his first win of 2026. Piastri showed encouraging pace at Monza, and with a fresh circuit demanding quick adaptation, his chances of a revival look promising.
