The premier American open-wheel championship, IndyCar, has officially confirmed a major international expansion that will take the series to Europe for the 2027 racing season. The championship is set to compete at the renowned circuit in Barcelona, Spain, marking a historic milestone as the first time the series has ever raced in the country.
Rumors regarding the landmark agreement first surfaced through local media reports earlier in the week before being officially validated by series organizers on Friday. According to the announcement, Alex Palou and the rest of the grid will travel to Spain for a marquee event scheduled on July 18, right in the heart of a traditionally busy summer stretch as part of a multi-year partnership.
Penske Entertainment President and CEO Mark Miles expressed immense enthusiasm regarding the agreement, highlighting the significance of taking the highly competitive championship across the Atlantic. The move serves as a direct response to the growing global demand to witness the thrilling brand of American open-wheel racing on international soil.

“This is a monumental day for our sport,” stated Mark Miles regarding the multi-year agreement with the Spanish venue. He emphasized the sheer excitement of finally bringing the championship closer to the passionate fanbase in the region.
“We are pleased to be able to take our ultra-competitive brand of wheel-to-wheel racing to Europe and thrilled that we can showcase IndyCar in Alex Palou’s hometown. We have seen Alex’s remarkable skill and talent for several years and know his fans in Spain have been clamoring to watch him race in person,” Miles added, praising the massive appeal of their multi-time champion.
This ambitious scheduling breaks a long-standing pattern of domestic-focused competition, with the series having stayed almost exclusively within North America—aside from an annual trip to Canada—over the past thirteen years. The last time the championship ventured outside North America was back in 2013 during an event in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
The catalyst for this breakthrough largely stems from the phenomenal success and global prominence of Spain's own multi-time champion, Alex Palou. Despite previous explorations of potential events in South America and Mexico stalling due to logistical hurdles, series leadership has successfully mapped out a viable framework to make the mid-season European journey a reality.
