Premier American open-wheel racing series IndyCar is reportedly on the verge of securing a landmark multi-year agreement to race at the former home of the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix, marking a major international expansion. According to reports originating from Spanish outlet El Periodico, a deal has been mapped out for a July date in the 2027 calendar, with expectations that an official announcement could drop as early as this week.
However, the sweeping claims from Spain were subsequently tempered by a contrasting report from United States-based publication Racer, which suggests that a deal is realistically more probable for the 2028 season rather than 2027. That same American report also downplayed assertions that a formal contract has already been completely finalized, though it did acknowledge that official pen-to-paper signatures could be inked in the near future.
Pursuing an event in Spain represents a calculated move designed to capitalize directly on the immense success and surging popularity of Spain's reigning superstar and champion, Alex Palou. His dominant performances have cultivated a massive dedicated fanbase in his home country, making a domestic round a lucrative proposition for both the series and local promoters.

Should the ambitious overseas venture come to full fruition, it will break a lengthy hiatus, serving as the first time IndyCar has raced outside of North America since its 2013 international excursion to the streets of Sao Paulo in Brazil. Bringing the championship to Catalonia would also serve as a crucial economic and sporting cushion, helping to fill the void left by Formula 1 shifting its annual Spanish Grand Prix destination over to Madrid.
The iconic Barcelona-Catalunya venue has recently been placed on a controversial race-hosting rotation alongside the Belgian Grand Prix. That specific scheduling vulnerability has reportedly acted as a primary catalyst for the Catalan government and the circuit ownership to aggressively pursue IndyCar as a high-profile replacement. Crucially, unlike the series' previous non-championship exhibition visit to Australia in 2008, the proposed outing in Spain will award full championship points.
