Jonas Folger admits he faces a major challenge as he returns to MotoGP to replace Maverick Vinales at the 2026 French Grand Prix with Tech3 KTM.

The German rider returns to premier-class competition after nearly three years away from regular MotoGP racing. Folger’s last appearance aboard the KTM RC16 also came as a substitute rider for Tech3 during the 2023 season.

This latest comeback is significantly more complicated because of the major technical evolution of the RC16 over the past three seasons. KTM has introduced substantial changes to the chassis, aerodynamic package, and overall handling philosophy as part of its effort to remain competitive in MotoGP’s modern aero-focused era.

“It’s going to be a very big challenge,” Folger admitted to MotoGP.com.

To accelerate his adaptation process, Folger completed a private two-day test at Mugello earlier this week. According to the German, the session was crucial because otherwise he would have arrived at Le Mans with almost no familiarity with the latest RC16 specification.

From a technical standpoint, Folger explained that the most noticeable changes involve the chassis and aerodynamic package. Over recent seasons, KTM has aggressively developed its aerodynamic concepts to improve braking stability and traction on corner exit.

“The chassis and all the aerodynamics have changed a lot compared to three years ago,” Folger explained.

Despite the additional preparation, Folger remains realistic regarding expectations for the weekend. He acknowledged that the overall level of MotoGP competition in 2026 is extremely high, making it difficult to immediately match the pace of full-time riders after such a long absence.

His primary objective is therefore not immediate results, but rebuilding familiarity with the bike, adapting his riding style to modern MotoGP demands, and understanding the latest tyre characteristics that have evolved considerably in recent years.

Le Mans also carries special significance for Folger because the French circuit was the venue of his first grand prix podium in the 125cc category back in 2009. In addition, the French Grand Prix represents Tech3’s home event, creating an especially emotional atmosphere for the team.

“I have very good memories here and it will definitely be nice to race again at Le Mans,” Folger said.

Meanwhile, Vinales continues recovering from shoulder surgery related to a loose screw issue connected to injuries suffered during last season’s German Grand Prix. His absence has once again intensified discussions regarding the need for permanent reserve riders in MotoGP.

With limited experience on KTM’s latest-generation machinery and competition levels tighter than ever, the Le Mans weekend is now shaping up as an important test of whether Folger can still adapt to the technical demands of modern MotoGP racing.
