Jon Armstrong believes road position could become a key advantage for M-Sport Ford during Rally Portugal 2026. The Northern Irish driver is aiming for a clean and trouble-free event following a difficult outing at the Canary Islands Rally.

Armstrong and co-driver Shane Byrne finished only 11th in the Canary Islands after battling multiple technical issues and difficult moments throughout the rally. They narrowly missed out on WRC points by just 2.8 seconds, making Portugal an important opportunity to rebuild momentum.

After two consecutive asphalt events, the WRC calendar now returns to gravel stages with Rally Portugal becoming the first major European gravel rally of the season. Armstrong admitted the event will present a very different challenge compared to Safari Rally Kenya, although certain weather-related conditions could still create similarities.

“If Thursday and Friday stay dry, road position could become an advantage for us. But if conditions turn wet, that advantage could disappear,” Armstrong explained.

From a technical perspective, Armstrong highlighted that the Portugal setup differs significantly from Safari Rally specifications. Rally Portugal demands a lower ride height, more aggressive European gravel suspension settings, and stronger mechanical grip performance across fast corners and loose gravel surfaces.

Weather conditions are expected to become one of the defining elements of the weekend. In dry conditions, drivers starting later may benefit from cleaner racing lines and improved grip after the road is swept by earlier cars. However, rain could quickly reverse that advantage by introducing mud and inconsistent surface conditions.

Armstrong is no newcomer to Rally Portugal, having previously competed there three times since making his debut in 2016. One of his strongest performances came in 2021 when he led the Junior WRC category after the opening day before a puncture ended his victory challenge.

In 2022, Armstrong again encountered early technical problems that disrupted his overall rhythm and competitiveness. Those experiences have influenced his 2026 approach, which is focused more heavily on consistency and risk management rather than outright pace.

“The main goal is to complete a clean rally and avoid problems,” Armstrong said.

From a championship perspective, Rally Portugal is viewed as an important event for M-Sport Ford to stabilise its early-season gravel form. The rally’s demanding characteristics also make it a major technical reference point for Rally2 development throughout the European phase of the WRC calendar.

Armstrong believes adaptability will ultimately become the decisive factor. In a rally known for punishing both tyres and machinery, even small mistakes or strategic miscalculations can dramatically alter the outcome.

With European gravel competition intensifying and Portugal expected to deliver unpredictable conditions throughout the weekend, Armstrong now faces one of the most important rallies of his 2026 campaign alongside M-Sport Ford.
