A chaotic opening day at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit saw a wild wallaby unexpectedly interrupt practice, forcing marshals to deploy the second red flag of the session. The unusual visitor sparked amusement across the media centre and garages, adding a bizarre twist to an already action-packed day of on-track drama during the 2026 season.
Before the furry intruder brought a brief halt to proceedings, Marco Bezzecchi found himself in deep trouble after clipping the rear of Alex Marquez's machine entering Miller Corner. The low-speed collision sent the Italian tumbling into the grass where he was briefly trapped beneath his RS-GP26, prompting the first red flag to clear debris scattered across the asphalt.
Despite enduring an earlier tumble at Siberia at the start of the afternoon session and his subsequent clash, Bezzecchi displayed remarkable resilience. Hopping onto his spare motorcycle after returning to the pit lane, he bounced back impressively to set the fastest lap time of the session.
At the sharp end of the timesheets, the factory Aprilia contender stormed to the top with a blistering 1:26.775s lap, leading satellite stand-out Raul Fernandez for Trackhouse. Marc Marquez emerged as the leading Ducati representative in third, keeping competitive pace ahead of the crucial qualifying sessions.
The top ten battle for automatic Q2 progression concluded with a fiercely contested spread of riders, while local favourite Jack Miller narrowly missed the cut in 12th place by less than a tenth of a second. Teams now brace for challenging wet weather conditions, with significant rainfall expected to hit the island ahead of Saturday's grid-deciding battles.
