Motorsport, Sportrik Media - Max Verstappen faces an additional challenge ahead of his debut at the Nürburgring 24 Hours after missing out on a key advantage in the qualifying format.
Under the 2026 regulations, six teams were initially set to receive automatic entry into the final Top Qualifying 3 (TQ3) shootout. However, following the cancellation of the first qualifier race earlier this month under exceptional circumstances, organisers have reduced that number to five teams.
As a result, Verstappen’s entry has not been granted a direct place in TQ3, meaning his team must progress through the full three-stage qualifying process, including Top Qualifying 1 and Top Qualifying 2, to secure a spot in the final session.

Verstappen will share driving duties with Dani Juncadella, Lucas Auer, and Jules Gounon. While progression remains possible, the route is significantly more demanding compared to teams already guaranteed a position in the decisive phase.
Compounding the challenge, regulations require each team to field a different driver in each qualifying stage. This removes the option of relying on a single qualifying specialist and instead places emphasis on consistent performance across the entire driver line-up.
Although starting position is less critical in a 24-hour endurance race, direct access to TQ3 offers both strategic and psychological advantages. Missing out on this opportunity increases the pressure on Verstappen’s team to execute flawlessly across the earlier sessions.
The following five teams have been confirmed as automatic entrants to TQ3:
| Number | Car | Drivers |
|---|---|---|
| #45 | Ferrari 296 GT3 | Perel, Marschall, Vermeulen, Neubauer |
| #16 | Audi R8 GT3 | Haase, Sims, Green |
| #47 | Mercedes AMG GT3 | Fukuzumi, Gamou, Krohn, Pittard |
| #1 | BMW M4 GT3 | Farfus, Marciello, Pepper, Van der Linde |
| #84 | Lamborghini Huracan GT3 | Engstler, Bortolotti, Niederhauser |
With a more demanding qualification pathway, Verstappen’s Nürburgring campaign will require strong execution across all stages. The outcome of these sessions will play a key role in shaping his competitive prospects in one of endurance racing’s most demanding events.
