Three Drivers Handed Grid Penalties for F1 United States GP 2026

At least three drivers are facing grid penalties at the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix after exceeding their permitted power unit component allowances for the season. The technical infringements will force a significant shake-up of the starting order at Austin.

Half of the entire grid had already exceeded at least one engine component allowance earlier this year, but that tally has now escalated to 12 out of the 22 drivers in the paddock facing reliability headaches.

Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto has taken a fourth engine store and a fourth control electronics unit of the year. This breaches the strict three-component limit for both parts, triggering a heavy 20-place grid penalty.

Despite the massive drop, Bortoleto has also equipped a new internal combustion engine, turbocharger, exhaust, and power unit ancillary component, though all of those specific elements remain safely within his legal allowance.

Elsewhere, Arvid Lindblad has been handed a five-place grid penalty. The rookie takes his sixth internal combustion unit of the year, well past the maximum limit of four allowed under current championship rules.

Under the sporting regulations, drivers typically receive a 10-place grid penalty for the very first component exceeding the limit, but subsequent overages drop to five-place grid penalties thereafter.

Rounding out the penalized trio is Franco Colapinto. He has opted for a fourth control electronics unit of the season, resulting in a 10-place grid drop for the upcoming US GP race.

The official breakdown sees Bortoleto tumbling 20 places, Colapinto dropping 10 spots, and Lindblad sliding down by 5 positions, setting the stage for a chaotic tactical battle through the field.
