George Russell has confessed that his own lack of performance during the 2026 Formula 1 season is what kept him awake at night, rather than missing out on the championship fight with his Mercedes teammate.
The current campaign has proven exceptionally brutal for the British driver. While his teenage teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli cruises toward a potential Drivers' Championship title, Russell has battled a punishing combination of mechanical issues, misfortune, and a chassis that fails to match his natural driving style.
Arriving at the paddock for the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, the experienced racer chose a path of deep introspection rather than pointing fingers at his engineering crew.

"It has been a very unique season. It has been a season where it's tested my character and resilience a lot, and you know, having to look at myself in the mirror numerous times and think how do I want to bounce back from these blows," Russell explained during Thursday's media session.
Rather than obsessing over the massive points deficit in the standings, the core issue troubling his mind was purely technical and focused on extracting optimal pace from his machinery.
"The things that were keeping me up at night wasn't necessarily the facts of the championship; it was more that my performance wasn't where I wanted it to be, and it was like, well, how am I going to get my performance back to the levels I know I'm capable of?" he admitted.
According to Motorsport.com, maintaining this level of accountability has allowed the Silver Arrows driver to refocus entirely on factors within his immediate control as the championship heads toward its climax.
