Robert Shwartzman will return to the World Endurance Championship Hypercar class next season, this time with French manufacturer Peugeot. The 26-year-old will drive one of the heavily revised 9X8 Le Mans Hypercars.
The move follows Prema Racing's withdrawal from the IndyCar Series at the start of 2026, which left Shwartzman without a race seat. He had previously secured pole position for the 2025 Indianapolis 500 with the team.
Shwartzman is no stranger to endurance racing. He previously competed in Hypercar with the satellite Ferrari 499P run by AF Corse, winning the Austin round in 2024 alongside Robert Kubica and Yifei Ye.
During his time as a test and reserve driver for Ferrari's Formula 1 team between 2022 and 2024, he also raced in the GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup with a factory AF Corse entry.
“I'm extremely happy to be returning to the WEC after my time racing in the US,” said Shwartzman. “Endurance racing is something I've really missed over the past two seasons, and I'm thrilled to be joining Team Peugeot TotalEnergies.”
“From my very first discussions with the team, I felt genuinely welcomed and immediately part of the project within a highly professional and ambitious environment. The 2027 programme is particularly exciting and I can't wait to contribute to this new chapter,” he added.
Peugeot Sport team principal Emmanuel Esnault praised Shwartzman's qualities: “His natural speed, adaptability and maturity make him an ideal fit for our project. He is quite impressive not only in terms of speed, but also mindset, approach and positivity.”
Shwartzman will have his first test with the 2027-spec 9X8 at the Algarve circuit later this month, as part of the car's ongoing development programme. The car made its debut at Paul Ricard at the end of July.
Esnault also hinted that the final WEC driver lineup for 2027 is not yet complete, with “still some decisions to make”. Development driver Doriane Pin is set to test the 2026-spec 9X8 at Paul Ricard in early December.
