WRC, Sportrik Media - Safari Rally Kenya 2026 is expected to feature a key battle between Elfyn Evans and the drivers from Hyundai Motorsport. The rally, held across the Great Rift Valley from 12–15 March, remains one of the most demanding events on the FIA World Rally Championship calendar due to its rough gravel roads, deep “fesh-fesh” sand sections, and unpredictable weather conditions.

Evans arrives in Kenya as the current WRC championship leader after a dominant victory at Rally Sweden earlier in the season. The Toyota Gazoo Racing driver has collected 60 points and aims to extend his advantage over closest rival Oliver Solberg. Evans also enters the event as the defending Safari Rally winner, having secured victory in the 2025 edition with a consistent and controlled performance.

One of Evans’ key strengths in Kenya lies in his disciplined driving style and his ability to manage tyres and mechanical components over long and punishing stages. These attributes are particularly valuable in Safari Rally conditions, where suspension damage, overheating, and mechanical wear frequently influence the final result. The reliability of the GR Yaris Rally1 has also been a major factor behind Toyota’s strong record in Kenya since the rally returned to the WRC calendar in 2021.

Hyundai, meanwhile, arrives with renewed optimism by introducing an updated evolution version of the i20 N Rally1. The Korean manufacturer has focused on improving reliability after technical issues affected its performance in previous Safari Rally events. The team’s lineup is led by Thierry Neuville, supported by rising French driver Adrien Fourmaux and experienced rally winner Esapekka Lappi in the third car.

Mechanical reliability is expected to be one of the decisive factors throughout the rally. Toyota’s cars have consistently demonstrated strong durability on Kenya’s rough terrain, while Hyundai must prove that its updated package can withstand the extreme conditions across the three-day competition. In addition, the starting order could play a strategic role, as Evans—leading the championship—will open the road during the early stages.

Weather conditions around Naivasha may also become a crucial variable. Sudden rain showers can transform dusty gravel roads into slippery mud sections, forcing teams to quickly adapt tyre strategies. In such scenarios, experience and the ability to read rapidly changing road conditions often become decisive advantages.

Overall, Evans remains the leading favourite thanks to his recent momentum and status as the defending Safari Rally champion. However, if Hyundai’s upgraded Rally1 package proves reliable across the demanding stages, Neuville could emerge as Evans’ main challenger heading into the decisive Hell’s Gate Power Stage that traditionally concludes the Safari Rally Kenya weekend.
