Charles Leclerc has openly acknowledged the superiority of Mercedes' power unit, which poses a significant threat to Ferrari on high-speed circuits. The admission came after qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, where Mercedes-powered cars dominated the top three positions.
Pierre Gasly's Alpine claimed pole position, ahead of George Russell's Mercedes and Oscar Piastri's McLaren. However, a penalty for Piastri for impeding another driver promoted the two Ferraris of Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton to third and fourth on the grid.
Leclerc's Honest Admission About Power Deficit
Despite starting from a promising position, Charles Leclerc refuses to be overconfident. The Monegasque driver voiced deep concerns about Ferrari's performance on the straights, which are crucial at Monza.
According to Leclerc, his car will struggle in the straights and be vulnerable to overtakes, despite having an advantage in the corners. He stressed that the team must work extra hard to stay ahead of rivals who have a significant power advantage.

Interestingly, Leclerc highlighted the superiority of Mercedes' internal combustion engine (ICE), which he believes is far more advanced. He even bet that this component provides extra thrust, allowing rivals to accelerate faster on the straights.
This creates a vicious cycle for Scuderia Ferrari. On one hand, they must conserve power at certain points to maintain reliability, while Mercedes can push aggressively without compromise. Ferrari did bring an engine upgrade to Monza, but the results have not yet closed the gap.
