The mystery machine built for the WRC27 regulations has finally broken cover. After months of behind-the-scenes development, Project Rally One completed its first test this week at a German racing circuit.
This moment has put the WRC paddock on high alert. Among the current teams, only Toyota is known to be developing a brand-new car for the upcoming era.
Joining Toyota will be two private constructors: Belgium's Project Rally One and Spain's RMC Motorsport. Of the two, Project Rally One is clearly the one to watch, having finally shown its hand in public.
Flawless Debut Run Under Heavy Loads
Technical director Lionel Hansen confirmed that the team has completed three days of running. The car was pushed hard over kerbs and at high speed, covering a substantial distance without a single issue.
"We have indeed completed three days of running. The car was subjected to heavy loads over the kerbs and at high speed, and we covered around 300 kilometres without encountering a single issue," Hansen told French outlet L'Equipe.
According to L'Equipe, three drivers took turns at the wheel, including Frenchman Stephane Lefebvre. The presence of experienced hands signals that this project is far from a mere sideshow.
Volkswagen Power and Ambitious Targets
In line with WRC27 rules, the test car is powered by a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine derived from current Rally2 machinery. The Belgian team has opted for a Volkswagen Group engine, already proven in the Skoda Rally2 car.
This strategic choice gives Project Rally One a head start. With a reliable engine base, they can focus development on chassis and aerodynamics. The team now holds full responsibility for the engine's evolution.
The target is bold: to compete in the season-opening Rally Monte Carlo in January 2027, with two cars. Their timeline is aggressive, but Hansen insists they are ahead of schedule.
"We are progressing faster than expected and we are going to continue testing, on asphalt in September and then on gravel in October. We are one month ahead of our original schedule," Hansen revealed.
Previously, Hansen stated that Project Rally One intends to contest five WRC rallies during the 2027 season. Yet, the driver lineup for next year remains an open question.
