Marc Marquez will miss the main French Grand Prix and the following Catalan round after suffering a right foot fracture in a severe crash during the Le Mans Sprint. However, the Ducati rider revealed a more critical medical revelation: he had already scheduled shoulder surgery prior to the foot injury.
Medical analysis shows that Marquez has been suffering from radial nerve interference in his right shoulder. This was caused by a broken screw that shifted its position by one to two millimeters, leading it to touch the radial nerve. This technical anatomical failure caused unpredictable nerve malfunctions, which Marquez identifies as the primary cause of his inconsistency and a series of unexpected crashes throughout the 2026 MotoGP season.

Marquez explained the discrepancy in physical reaction between riding a motocross bike and a MotoGP machine. While he felt fine during motocross training, the specific riding position on a MotoGP bike triggers pressure on the shifted screw, which in turn compresses the radial nerve. This results in a loss of motor coordination at critical moments, leading to technical errors during on-track maneuvers that were otherwise invisible during off-track training.

The decision to undergo both shoulder and foot surgeries simultaneously is aimed at accelerating the overall recovery process. The shoulder procedure is a straightforward operation to open the area and remove the problematic screw. The expected recovery time is relatively short, and the procedure is intended to eliminate the physical risk factors that have hindered his ability to maintain consistent lap times throughout the season.
The current championship standings reflect the significant impact of these injuries. Marquez is currently fifth in the standings, trailing the championship leader by 51 points. Although he has secured two sprint wins this season, the radial nerve interference prevented him from him from competing consistently in full-distance races, which has been a la vital factor in his quest for the world title.
Historically, Marquez has a tendency to conceal injury issues from the media, as seen with his recurring shoulder dislocations in 2018 and his right arm complications in 2022. However, the open admission of this radial nerve issue provides a technical explanation for why he had been riding more cautiously and with less aggression in recent rounds. Full recovery from these two procedures will be la the key for Marquez to return to peak competitiveness for the remainder of the 2026 season.
