Silverstone, England — Pecco Bagnaia did not hide the significant struggles faced by the factory Ducati team during the MotoGP Sprint at Silverstone. The drop in performance of the soft tyre became a nightmare, leaving the Italian rider and his teammate, Marc Marquez, as the two slowest riders at the end of the race.
By the sixth lap of the 10-lap sprint, both Marquez and Bagnaia were already losing time, with their lap times dropping to around 2 minutes. The decline was most evident in the final two laps, where Marquez posted 2'02.5 and 2'02.9, while Bagnaia could only manage 2'01.1 and 2'02.5. Of the 20 riders on track, only Toprak Razgatlioglu from Pramac Yamaha was slower than them.
Bagnaia made no excuses. “The factory team suffered a lot today. Marc and I were the slowest riders in the last laps. So it's hard to imagine what to do. I expected a drop in performance, but not to this level,” he said to Motosan. He also admitted that his initial target for the weekend was to finish in the top 10, but with this performance, even that seems difficult. In the Sprint, Bagnaia finished 17th.
Amid the factory team's troubles, Alex Marquez emerged as a glimmer of hope. Bagnaia praised the Spaniard's performance: “He's doing a fantastic job. Luckily we have him on a Ducati, he's very strong and fast, and he makes the difference compared to the other Ducatis. I hope we can solve our problem.”
Bagnaia also explained the root cause: “The lack of grip is due to wear. The right side of the tyre was completely consumed, but it's not a tyre problem, it's our bike that can't find traction.” This statement underscores that Ducati must quickly address the issue before the main race, or risk losing valuable championship points.
