Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Max Verstappen admitted his frustration after Red Bull Racing endured a difficult Sprint Qualifying session at the 2026 Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai. The four-time world champion finished 1.7 seconds behind pole-sitter George Russell of Mercedes.

The result leaves Verstappen starting eighth on the grid for the sprint race at the Shanghai International Circuit. The Dutch driver described the session as a “disaster”, highlighting the scale of the problems facing Red Bull during the early phase of the race weekend.

According to Verstappen, the RB car suffered from multiple performance issues simultaneously, including a lack of tyre grip and inconsistent balance throughout the lap. He explained that the car frequently shifted between oversteer and understeer, making it difficult to extract competitive lap times.

“Nothing is working. There is just no grip,” Verstappen said in an interview with Viaplay after Sprint Qualifying.

“The car oversteers and then understeers again. We have no grip at the rear, no grip at the front, and a lot of tyre wear.”

Verstappen added that the issues indicate a broader combination of shortcomings, including insufficient downforce, unstable aerodynamic balance, and excessive tyre degradation. He also hinted that other aspects of the package could be contributing to the performance deficit, including the power unit.

The difficulties were so evident that team principal Laurent Mekies reportedly apologised to Verstappen at the end of the session. The situation underlines the scale of the challenge facing Red Bull as it attempts to recover competitiveness during the Chinese Grand Prix weekend.

When asked about the possibility of securing a race victory later in the season, Verstappen dismissed the topic entirely, emphasising that the current performance gap makes such discussions premature.

“Please don’t bring that up right now when you are 1.7 seconds behind,” Verstappen said.

“That’s why I don’t even want to mention it, because so much still needs to happen on our side before we can even think about it.”

The sprint race in Shanghai will therefore represent an important opportunity for Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing to evaluate the car’s issues under race conditions. The outcome may also provide an early indication of whether the team can close the gap to rivals such as Mercedes as the 2026 Formula 1 season progresses.
