MotoGP, Sportrik Media - Marc Marquez claimed a dramatic victory in the MotoGP Spanish Grand Prix sprint at Jerez after recovering from a crash in the first-ever flag-to-flag sprint race.

The Ducati Lenovo Team rider started from pole in dry conditions, but the race was quickly transformed by increasing rainfall. The evolving grip levels forced riders into strategic decisions regarding bike changes, turning the sprint into a complex tactical contest.

Marquez initially lost ground after crashing at the final corner while running in second position. He immediately rejoined and entered the pitlane to switch to his wet-weather bike, following similar moves from Francesco Bagnaia and Brad Binder.

A mistake from Binder after the pit cycle opened the opportunity for Marquez to re-enter the fight at the front. With three laps remaining, he executed a decisive overtake on Bagnaia to reclaim the lead.

Marquez then controlled the final laps, extending his advantage to 3.050 seconds at the chequered flag to secure his second sprint victory of the 2026 season.

Bagnaia delivered a strong recovery from 15th on the grid to finish second, securing his first sprint podium of the year. Franco Morbidelli completed the podium after a consistent performance from the back of the field.

The race featured multiple incidents, including a difficult start for championship leader Marco Bezzecchi, who dropped down the order due to wheelspin and later crashed after switching bikes. Aprilia teammate Jorge Martin retired early due to a technical issue.

Alex Marquez briefly led the race after overtaking his brother, but also crashed as track conditions deteriorated further. The rapidly changing weather played a decisive role throughout the sprint.

Strategic pit timing and adaptation to varying grip levels proved critical, with riders such as Fabio Di Giannantonio and Raul Fernandez managing to secure strong finishes through alternative strategies.

The result moves Marquez up to fourth in the championship standings, 24 points behind the leader. Despite his retirement, Bezzecchi retains the lead of the standings with a narrow margin over Martin heading into Sunday’s main race at Jerez.
