Mercedes has officially confirmed that Kimi Antonelli will receive a grid penalty at this weekend's Italian Grand Prix. The decision comes after the young Italian driver exceeded the allowed limit of engine components due to reliability issues the team has faced throughout the season.
The championship leader has reached the maximum allocation for several power unit components, including the V6 and exhaust system. Mercedes has chosen to replace all major engine components at once in Monza, rather than spreading the penalty across multiple races, to minimize the competitive impact.
This decision was based on careful calculations, as team principal Toto Wolff explained. "With Kimi, we are taking the full thing," he said. "In theory, our calculations say that this is the best track to take it. We are here to fight for a championship, not to get the most PR."
The timing is ironic for Antonelli, as Monza is his home race and he is in top form. The 20-year-old leads the standings with a 59-point advantage over teammate George Russell and Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton, who are tied for second. He is also chasing a piece of Italian history, as no home driver has won at Monza since Ludovico Scarfiotti in 1966.
Starting from the back will complicate Antonelli's bid to end that 60-year wait, but Monza's high-speed layout and overtaking opportunities were key factors in Mercedes' choice. Antonelli accepted the decision with grace. "Of course, it's my home race, but I think it's the best race to do so," he said. "I still think it will give me a chance to do a great result and bring home good points."
Meanwhile, Mercedes also expects George Russell to exceed his allocation before the season ends, but has yet to decide when to introduce further components. Russell only moved to his fourth power unit in Hungary, giving Mercedes flexibility. Wolff confirmed discussions are ongoing, and the team is unlikely to compromise both cars at the same event, especially in the constructors' fight.
With this penalty, Antonelli's chances of a historic home victory are challenged, but he remains confident. The iconic Monza circuit will witness how Mercedes' bold strategy unfolds in front of the Italian crowd.
