Two decades have passed since Peter Brock left us, yet his presence at Bathurst remains as strong as ever. The National Motor Racing Museum (NMRM) at the foot of Mount Panorama is now the epicenter of remembrance, honoring the 'King of the Mountain' with a special exhibition featuring his legendary machines.
Among the permanent displays, a bronze sculpture of Brock stands proudly in front of the museum, alongside the 1984 Bathurst 1000-winning Holden Commodore VK 'Big Banger'. With its iconic dayglow livery, it is arguably Brock's most famous car and now a focal point for visitors.
More Than Just a Museum
The NMRM goes beyond static displays. Curator Brad Owen has deliberately brought together a variety of other race cars driven by Brock to celebrate his glittering career. There's the Monaro that won the 2003 Bathurst 24 Hour, and the recently restored 1994 VP Commodore—the car that gave Holden Racing Team their first Australian Touring Car Championship round victory.
Visitors can also see a Mobil Ford Sierra, a Volvo 850 from the Eastern Creek 12 Hour, a test car from the 1995 Round Australia Trial, a Group Nc Torana XU-1, and a replica of Brock's first race car, the famous Holden-powered Austin A30. Together, they paint a complete picture of a legend's journey.
Bathurst Mayor Robert 'Stumpy' Taylor emphasized that Brock's legacy transcends motorsport. "Peter Brock's influence transcended motorsport. Through his role as a spokesman for his many sponsors, his charitable work through the Peter Brock Foundation and his dedication to his fans, Brock became a national icon. The outpouring of grief after his tragic passing was a testament to his place in Australian society," he said.
The exhibition will run through the end of the 2026 Christmas holidays. Meanwhile, next month's Bathurst 1000 promises to be even more special, with a fleet of ex-Brock race cars expected to descend on the Mountain as part of celebrations organized by Supercars and the council. A fitting tribute to the legend.
