Jorge Lorenzo couldn't hide his admiration for the fierce battle between Marc Marquez and Jorge Martin on the opening lap of the Austrian GP sprint at Red Bull Ring. According to him, Marquez's aggression actually triggered the best version of Martin, who ultimately won the race.
“It was interesting, beautiful from the first lap. Marquez wanted to prevent both Pedro and Martin from leading, that's why he was so aggressive,” Lorenzo told DAZN. “Marquez was super aggressive and forced Martin off that chicane. I think that's exactly what brought out Martin's best version. A passionate Martin, a Martin with rage, a Martin who wanted to prove he could come back strong, and he did.”
The crucial moment came when Marquez defended his position in the corner. Lorenzo believes Marquez “entered too fast and put Martin alongside,” then “released the brakes in the corner without caring much about leaving space for Martin.” As a result, Martin ran wide and had to start a comeback from behind. “Martin was a disaster at that moment because of his bad position, many riders passed him,” Lorenzo added.
However, the incident didn't make Martin give up. The Spanish rider instead rode fiercely, overtaking Alex Marquez, Marco Bezzecchi, and Marc Marquez, before capitalizing on Pedro Acosta's crash who had been leading. “He managed to bounce back and showed a champion's mentality,” praised Lorenzo.
Meanwhile, Acosta was impressive before the incident. Lorenzo called the young rider the fastest, but lost control because he entered the corner too quickly. “Throughout the weekend Pedro was braking and entering corners like an animal, but here he exaggerated even more. It seemed like he wanted to skip the chicane and go straight through that asphalt area between corners,” he analyzed. Lorenzo refused to speculate further on the exact cause of the crash.
Martin's sprint victory further heats up the title fight. With a strong performance in Austria, he sent a clear signal that the championship chase is far from over. Meanwhile, Marquez had to watch his closest rival return to winning ways.
For Ducati, this result serves as a wake-up call to keep supporting both riders for the rest of the season. While Pedro Acosta showed incredible speed, it didn't yield a sweet result. The main Austrian GP race will be the real test for the title contenders.
