Lando Norris has offered a cautiously positive assessment of McLaren's comprehensive upgrade package introduced for this weekend's São Paulo Grand Prix at Interlagos. As the only team to bring significant updates to Brazil, McLaren is banking on a revised floor, a new beam wing, and a test-concept front wing to unlock efficiency in the MCL40, which has struggled with a narrow operating window all season.
The timing of these upgrades is critical, as McLaren looks to circumvent the aerodynamic limitations imposed by the car's shorter wheelbase design. While Norris led the timesheets in FP1, he ultimately trailed the newly crowned champion Kimi Antonelli by two-tenths of a second during the FP2 session, highlighting the ongoing gap to the Mercedes outfit.
"It's tricky to say. You're always kind of pushing things to the limit. Ultimately, the upgrades are there to bring lap time and performance. They're not set out to improve handling," Norris noted, speaking to reporters. However, he admitted that the car feels slightly more straightforward to drive, a welcome shift given the unpredictability the team has faced throughout the 2026 campaign.

The technical challenge remains significant, as reports suggest the car's design architecture has permanently capped the floor's aerodynamic ceiling. Despite this, Norris remains encouraged by the day's progress. "FP1 was a little bit of a surprise, a pleasant surprise. FP2, we seemed to struggle a little bit more compared to the Mercedes, but relative to some of the others, we seemed pretty good," he explained.
As the team prepares to consolidate all new parts for Saturday's action, the focus shifts to closing the delta to Antonelli. With the championship narrative already shifting, McLaren’s ability to extract performance from this package could determine the intensity of the fight for the remaining podium spots in the closing stages of the season.
