2026 Brazil GP FP2 Drama: Red Bull Ends Verstappen’s Session Early Amid RB22 Setup Struggles

The atmosphere at the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace always delivers high tension, and the second free practice (FP2) of the 2026 Brazilian GP was no exception. Under the challenging Interlagos sky, Red Bull Racing was forced to abort their race simulation program early after Max Verstappen was spotted jumping out of his RB22 cockpit with several crucial minutes remaining. This decision sent shockwaves through the paddock, especially as rival teams continued to gather vital data on the legendary anti-clockwise circuit.

Although Max Verstappen managed to secure the third-fastest time in the qualifying simulations—trailing Kimi Antonelli and Lando Norris—his car's performance plummeted during high-fuel runs. The inconsistency during the long runs prompted the team to take drastic measures. Hannah Schmitz, Red Bull's strategy lead, explained that continuing the session was no longer deemed beneficial for the team's data collection ahead of Sunday's Grand Prix.

"It was just finding a lot of inconsistency in the long run, and we didn't feel like it was helpful anymore. We weren't getting the data we needed. We knew the things that we wanted to be looking at and changing overnight, so we just went straight into that," Schmitz stated regarding the reason behind Verstappen's premature stoppage.

The situation in the Milton Keynes-based squad's garage intensified as Kimi Antonelli from Mercedes dominated the timesheets. While Verstappen struggled with steering issues, his teammate Isack Hadjar also voiced similar complaints. Hadjar, who was involved in an opening-lap incident in Mexico, seemed to still be adapting to the RB22's temperamental nature through Interlagos' technical sectors.

Interestingly, Schmitz viewed the string of complaints from both drivers as a positive development. For her, identifying specific car weaknesses is the first step toward making significant gains before qualifying and the race. "Everyone agrees that there's a lot of potential within the car. Both drivers, there are things that they want to look into and change overnight, but in a way, that's a good thing. That means we know what's happening on the car and what we can address," she added optimistically.

These technical hurdles come at a pivotal moment for Verstappen, who is currently chasing the runner-up spot in the standings. With high tire degradation at Interlagos and unpredictable wind gusts, the failure to secure solid long-run data could backfire for Red Bull. The team must now work overtime in the simulation room to ensure the RB22 is not just fast over a single lap, but stable throughout Sunday's grueling race distance.

The action at Interlagos is set to intensify as Red Bull attempts to bridge the gap to Mercedes and McLaren. Formula 1 fans worldwide are now waiting to see if the radical overnight setup changes can restore the defending champion's dominance or if they will fall further behind in the elite battle at the front of the grid.
