The atmosphere at the Interlagos Circuit always presents unique technical challenges, and for Liam Lawson, Friday at the 2026 Brazilian Grand Prix served as a stark lesson in precision. After a solid showing in the opening session, the Racing Bulls driver had to swallow a bitter pill as a set-up experiment on the VCARB03 machine resulted in significant understeer during FP2.

Lawson, currently under intense scrutiny regarding his future, admitted that his team is caught in a classic F1 weekend dilemma. With forecasts predicting heavy rain for Sunday's race, the team must decide between chasing peak performance for a dry qualifying session or prioritizing a car set-up suitable for wet conditions, which is crucial for points scoring.

"We started a little bit stronger this morning, and then we tried something that didn't really work in FP2," Lawson explained. "When it got a lot colder, the stuff we changed was in the opposite direction, so it didn't really help. It was probably one of the worst balances we've had this season. We'll probably go back on that for FP3."

The challenge for Lawson and teammate Arvid Lindblad lies not just in the mechanics, but in the technical characteristics of Interlagos. Lawson highlighted the difficulty of preparing tires for a fast lap due to the short nature of the circuit, where any traffic in the pit lane significantly impacts performance at Turn 1.

Amidst the brutal business of F1, as often analyzed by pundits like Martin Brundle, Lawson is tasked with keeping his composure. He recognizes that while the FP2 experiment failed, the data remains vital for determining the car's direction before qualifying begins.

With the threat of rain looming, the team's decision not to make drastic changes will be key. Lawson must balance the need for single-lap speed with a stable car capable of handling the potential deluge at Interlagos on race day.
