A dramatic conclusion to the Formula 1 Brazilian Grand Prix at the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace Interlagos saw a late post-race penalty alter the final classification after Charles Leclerc was handed a five-second time penalty. The sanction successfully promoted Liam Lawson to seventh position, handing the young charger two crucial championship points and extending his impressive points-scoring streak.

The intense on-track battle unfolded at Turn 12 during the closing stages of the race on a wet and treacherous track surface. Contact occurred between Leclerc's Ferrari and the left-rear wheel of Lawson's Racing Bulls machine as they fiercely disputed seventh place. Although the New Zealander initially managed to stay ahead immediately following the brush, Leclerc forced his way through just a few corners later to cross the finish line less than two seconds ahead.

Following a thorough investigation, the race stewards rejected the argument that the contact had made no material difference, ruling that it directly enabled the Ferrari driver to close the gap and complete the maneuver. "While we acknowledge that the contact was minor, having examined the fight on track between the two cars, we conclude that Car 16 was able to get closer to and thereafter overtake Car 30 because of the contact," the stewards stated in their official verdict.

Officials took into account the challenging wet weather conditions and the limited force of the impact when deciding on the five-second penalty instead of a harsher ten-second sanction. Lawson, who immediately reported minor damage to his left-rear rim over the team radio, capitalized on the revised result to secure his fifth consecutive points finish. His race had already featured a brilliant surge from third on the grid to second at the opening corner before fluctuating track conditions pushed him down the order.

The post-race penalty report also highlighted similar incidents up and down the pitlane. Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli received a five-second time penalty for an unsafe release directly into the path of Franco Colapinto's Alpine, though he retained a comfortable fifth-place finish. Meanwhile, Haas rookie Oliver Bearman was similarly penalized for an unsafe pit release involving Leclerc, leaving his 17th-place classification unaffected as the paddock wrapped up a chaotic weekend in Sao Paulo.
