Charles Leclerc Penalised in Brazil After Controversial Clash with Liam Lawson

The Brazilian Grand Prix weekend at the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace Interlagos concluded with a post-race setback for Charles Leclerc. The Scuderia Ferrari star was handed a five-second time penalty following a wheel-to-wheel clash, resulting in a demotion in the final race classification.

The dramatic incident unfolded on lap 69 as the Monegasque driver engaged in a fierce battle for seventh place with his Racing Bulls opponent at the notorious Turn 12 Juncao corner. Contact was made between the two cars, allowing the Ferrari driver to complete a crucial overtake, though both competitors managed to keep their cars on track and reach the chequered flag.

Following a formal review involving video evidence, telemetry data, and driver hearings, FIA stewards determined that the Ferrari driver was culpable for the collision. The official stewards' report noted that while the impact was minor and wet weather conditions provided mitigating circumstances to reduce a potential ten-second penalty, the move unfairly disrupted the rival car.

The subsequent five-second time penalty dropped the Ferrari charger from seventh back down to eighth place in the official results. The ruling brought an abrupt end to what initially looked like a clean points-scoring recovery on a challenging afternoon.

In addition to the Ferrari incident, newly crowned world champion Kimi Antonelli and Haas junior Oliver Bearman also faced disciplinary actions from race control for unsafe pit lane releases during a chaotic grand prix.
