Kimi Antonelli expressed relief after limiting the damage at the 2026 Hungarian Formula 1 Grand Prix and extending his championship lead to exactly 50 points heading into the summer break.

The Mercedes driver started seventh after receiving a three-place grid penalty in qualifying. From that position, Antonelli recovered to finish third.

Mercedes initially attempted to take Antonelli off-sequence by committing to a one-stop strategy. That plan was eventually abandoned when the tyre was considered too close to its limit and the car’s pace brought him into podium contention.

“It was a tough race. It was really hard to overtake, so we had to do something with strategy, and initially we tried to go for the one-stop,” Antonelli said.

Antonelli extended his opening stint before eventually stopping for fresh tyres. The decision left him with stronger rubber during the closing phase and created an opportunity to claim third place.

The Virtual Safety Car triggered by Oscar Piastri’s retirement then changed the situation again. Both Ferrari drivers stopped and fitted soft tyres, while Antonelli remained on the hard compound.

“They told me the tyre was too much on the limit, so we stopped. Then, with the Virtual Safety Car, the two Ferraris boxed, and I knew it would be difficult because they were on softs while I was on hards,” he said.

Lewis Hamilton initially emerged from the pit lane ahead of Antonelli but was required to return the position after replays showed he had crossed the relevant VSC line behind the Mercedes. Hamilton continued to apply pressure until the finish.

Antonelli successfully defended third place from Hamilton. A five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane later dropped the Ferrari driver from fourth to fifth.

The result moved Antonelli to 219 points. Hamilton remains second with 169, while George Russell sits a further nine points behind on 160.

Russell could only finish seventh after the anti-stall system activated at the start and cost him several positions. The combination of results allowed Antonelli to strengthen his control of the championship.

“It is the best way to go into the summer break. Today was really about damage limitation,” Antonelli said.

Despite carrying a significant advantage into the second half of the campaign, Antonelli does not believe the title contest is settled. He expects the fight to become more difficult after the break and insists Mercedes must continue pushing.

“We have to keep pushing because the second half is going to be hard, but we will try our best,” he concluded.
