Madrid will host the Spanish Grand Prix this weekend, but the wait for clarity on Fernando Alonso's future in Formula 1 will continue. Sources indicate that no contract announcement is expected at the brand-new Madring circuit.
Fernando Alonso's current deal with Aston Martin expires at the end of the 2026 season. The two-time world champion's future has been a hot topic since the start of the year, particularly after the Silverstone-based squad's disappointing performance with Honda power units under the new regulations.
Several scenarios have been considered, including a return to Alpine for a fourth stint at Enstone, where Alonso enjoyed his greatest successes. However, that door has closed, with Pierre Gasly under contract until 2028 and Franco Colapinto's deal recently extended through 2027. Retirement has been repeatedly denied by the 45-year-old, making a stay at Aston Martin the most logical option.
With few alternatives available in the driver market, both parties are in no rush. Negotiations are believed to be complex, with team owner Lawrence Stroll likely to offer a pay raise to compensate Alonso for the team's struggles. The contract length is another key topic, with a possible one-plus-one-year deal, as well as discussions about Alonso's future role within the Aston Martin organization after his racing career ends.
Alonso remains confident in Honda's ability to recover. At Monza, he stated, "I 100% trust Honda. We started on the wrong foot, but I have no doubts they will get there. We don't want to wait five years like last time; we want to do it in two or three years maximum."
Aston Martin is keen to retain Alonso. Trackside officer Mike Krack said, "With a driver of this experience and record, it's a matter of respect to give him time. I'm confident we can find a good solution."
The delay signals that both parties are carefully planning a long-term future, not just a simple contract extension. Alonso's decision will be pivotal for Aston Martin's development trajectory in the coming seasons.
