Joan Mir required stitches on his right hand after suffering a heavy crash during the 2026 French MotoGP at Le Mans. The Honda HRC rider sustained a laceration following his fall while battling inside the top six during Sunday’s grand prix.
The incident marked another frustrating setback for Mir, who had otherwise enjoyed one of his strongest weekends of the season. The 2020 MotoGP world champion qualified seventh and finished sixth in Saturday’s Sprint race before once again running competitively in the main grand prix.
Mir was holding sixth position until lap 20 of the 27-lap race before crashing out. Honda later cancelled all of his scheduled media activities and confirmed that the Spaniard required stitches to treat a cut on his right hand.

"It was a disappointing way to finish what had been a very strong weekend for us," Mir explained.
The Spanish rider stated that the accident was triggered by changing front tyre temperatures after overtaking Fabio Quartararo. While following the Yamaha rider, Mir felt the hard front tyre remained within a stable operating window due to the slipstream effect and more consistent braking rhythm.
However, once he moved into clean air, the front tyre temperature rapidly dropped, forcing him to place greater load onto the front of the RC213V in an attempt to restore grip. The situation ultimately caused the front-end to lose adhesion during the initial braking phase.
"After overtaking Fabio, the front tyre started getting colder and colder, so I had to attack the front harder to bring temperature back. Then I lost the front very early under braking," Mir said.
From a technical perspective, the issue once again highlighted one of the key weaknesses of Honda’s 2026 RC213V package. The Honda remains highly sensitive to front tyre temperature fluctuations and weight-transfer changes, particularly once riders leave the slipstream and begin operating in clean air. As a result, riders are often forced to operate extremely close to the grip limit simply to maintain competitive pace.
Mir also repeated his long-standing concern that the margin between crashing and staying upright on the current Honda remains extremely narrow. The comment continues a pattern of criticism throughout the season regarding the RC213V’s unpredictable front-end behaviour during aggressive braking phases.
Despite the heavy impact and hand injury, Mir confirmed that he escaped without more serious physical consequences. However, the Le Mans retirement means he has only seen the chequered flag once in a full grand prix across the opening five rounds of the 2026 MotoGP season. With the Catalan Grand Prix approaching next weekend, Honda now faces increasing pressure to improve RC213V front-end stability before more potential results disappear through similar crashes.
