Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Max Verstappen has received strong praise from motorsport legend Jacky Ickx, who highlighted the Dutch driver’s ability to overcome the limitations of his Red Bull Racing machinery in the current Formula 1 landscape.

Speaking to international media, Ickx pointed to a defining period over the past two seasons that strengthened Verstappen’s standing within the paddock. He noted that sustained dominance can often lead to fatigue among fans, but Verstappen’s performances without consistently having the best car have reinforced his reputation.

“If someone keeps winning and you already know who will be champion, in the long run it can work against you. People get tired of seeing the same winner. But Max, especially last year and the year before, showed that even without the best car, he can still win. That’s why he is so admired,” Ickx said.

The remarks carry additional relevance given the current challenges faced by Red Bull with the RB22 package. The situation has placed Verstappen under increased competitive pressure, further highlighting his capacity to extract performance through driving technique and race management.

Ickx also positioned Verstappen among a rare category of drivers who define their era. He emphasized that while every decade produces fast drivers, only a few reach an exceptional level of performance comparable to Verstappen’s trajectory since entering Formula 1 at a young age.

“Every decade there are good drivers, but then there is one who is exceptionally fast. That is Max. He started very young and was always quick. The combination of driver, car and engineers came together at the right time,” he explained.

A key element of Ickx’s assessment was Verstappen’s consistent dominance over his team-mates at Red Bull. He described the statistical gap as clear evidence of the Dutchman’s superior performance level within the team environment.

“You only have to look at how he has beaten his team-mates. He has completely destroyed them. And when I say destroyed, I mean truly dominated,” Ickx stated.

Beyond Formula 1, Ickx also welcomed Verstappen’s involvement in other racing disciplines, including appearances at the Nürburgring Nordschleife as part of broader endurance racing ambitions. He contrasted this with earlier eras, when drivers regularly competed across multiple categories.

According to Ickx, modern contractual structures and manufacturer commitments have removed much of that flexibility, shaping a different generation of drivers. He noted that today’s drivers are often tied to specific teams and sponsors from a young age, limiting opportunities to diversify their racing activities.

On a personal level, Ickx described himself as an admirer of Verstappen, citing both his on-track performance and off-track attitude. He emphasized that such qualities contribute to a broader perception that may evolve as people come to understand the driver beyond his competitive image.

As the 2026 season continues to present new technical and competitive challenges, Ickx’s assessment reinforces Verstappen’s position as a benchmark driver in modern Formula 1, particularly in his ability to deliver results under less-than-ideal conditions.
