Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Isack Hadjar saw his debut race with Red Bull Racing end in disappointment after suffering an engine failure in the early stages of the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix 2026 at Albert Park, Melbourne.

Starting from third on the grid, the French driver was running in fifth place by Lap 11, closely following the leading group that consisted of two Ferrari and two Mercedes cars. However, smoke suddenly appeared from the rear of his car, powered by the Red Bull Powertrains engine developed in partnership with Ford.

The mechanical failure forced Hadjar to retire from the race and triggered a Virtual Safety Car period. The interruption immediately prompted several teams to make strategic pit stops during the neutralised phase of the race.

Among the leading group, Mercedes drivers George Russell and Kimi Antonelli opted to pit under the VSC conditions. In contrast, Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton remained on track, allowing the Scuderia to hold the top two positions while Russell rejoined in third.

Meanwhile, Max Verstappen made significant progress through the field after starting from 20th on the grid. The Dutch driver climbed to sixth place in the early stages of the race without making a pit stop, benefiting from the strategy variations caused by the Virtual Safety Car.

The race had already seen disruption before the start, with Oscar Piastri crashing on the reconnaissance lap and failing to reach the grid, while Nico Hulkenberg was unable to start due to a technical problem with his Audi on the grid.

With Hadjar’s retirement adding another twist to the race, the early stages of the 2026 Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park developed into a strategic contest influenced by reliability issues, pit stop timing, and race interruptions.
