Netflix has finally lifted the veil on its latest documentary, Schumacher ’94 – The Birth of a Legend. With the first trailer released during the Italian Grand Prix weekend at Monza, fans are invited to relive the 1994 season, the year Michael Schumacher clinched his maiden Formula 1 world title with Benetton.
The film is set to premiere globally on October 2 and focuses entirely on Schumacher's breakthrough campaign at the age of 25. Back then, he emerged as the sport's newest sensation and a national hero in Germany. It was a season full of drama, victories, and controversy that laid the foundation for the legend we know today.
Schumacher opened the season with a win in Brazil and went on to take eight victories before eventually defeating Williams rival Damon Hill by a single point in the final standings. However, the road to the title was far from smooth. The controversial collision in Adelaide during the season finale added a layer of drama, as both drivers were fighting for the championship and ended up crashing out.
Beyond Schumacher's exploits, the film will also delve into the darker side of the 1994 season. The tragic deaths of Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna at Imola cast a shadow over the championship. Amidst the mourning, Schumacher and Benetton also faced several sporting and technical controversies that added to the season's intense atmosphere.
The trailer combines archival footage with new interviews from those closest to Schumacher. His wife, Corinna Schumacher, features prominently, offering personal insights. "Not many people know Michael the way I know him," she says in the trailer. She also calls 1994 "the beginning of something great."
Executive producer Janek Romero and Schumacher's long-time manager Sabine Kehm attended the premiere screening at Monza. Kehm admitted that revisiting that season stirs up strong emotions, especially given the mix of success and tragedy. "Looking back naturally stirs up emotions," Kehm said. "But for me – and for Corinna too – the joy outweighs everything else, because ultimately it's a story with a happy ending."
Directed by Christin Freitag and produced by LEONINE Documentaries, this project becomes Netflix's second major Schumacher film after the 2021 documentary Schumacher. Meanwhile, a separate drama film titled The Kaiser is also in the works, showing that public interest in the German F1 legend remains strong.
